Quarter to Three
Flo Rida
There's a great new rap song called "Low" by Flo Rida. Here's the chorus:
Shorty had them Apple Bottom Jeans (jeans)
Boots with the fur (with the fur)
The whole club was lookin' at her
She hit the flo' (she hit the flo')
Next thing you know
Shorty got low low low low low low low low!
Flo Rida is clearly responding to Edgar Allen Poe's "The Bells":
Hear the sledges with the bells --
Silver bells!
What a world of merriment their melody foretells!
How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle,
In the icy air of night!
While the stars that oversprinkle
All the heavens, seem to twinkle
With a crystalline delight;
Keeping time, time, time,
In a sort of Runic rhyme,
To the tintinnabulation that so musically wells
From the bells, bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells --
From the jingling and the tinkling of the bells.
("Flo Rida," incidentally, is a brilliant name-invention. Rap is about "flow": the organic movement of words. This performer is a "rida" ("rider") of the "flo" ("flow"). He's really from Florida -- born in Opa-Locka. And remarkably, Flo Rida's label is "Poe Boy Entertainment"!)
